I generally play a full household, so that I have 8 Sims under my control. This allows for me to make sure all the drinks are had, the number of Sims consuming the food, involving the birthday Sim in conversation, et al, can be met. Guests are just too unpredictable. If not having the Gold for this category caused you undue grief, create a larger household to throw the party so you can control the situation better. Now, if I can only get the guests at a wedding to be considerate, take a seat, and actually witness the nuptials, I'd be a happy camper.
