I do rotational play. I use clubs a lot to help with skilling and making friends. I have my sims travel off the lot on their days off. I tend to either modify lots or build my own to my liking and to make sure it serves every purpose I want it to. I don't worry about children. I play with aging off. No need to rush through anything then. I take my time building the sims life and telling their story. I make over sims all the time. I delete sims I dislike. I either delete or evict premades to my own sims in town. I got rid of the idea that I will "never" play and I just go for it. If my sim meets a townie who has a trait I am not fond of I have no issue changing the trait.
If you're stuck in a rut perhaps roll dice. 1. Friendly greeting 2. Rude greeting. 3 Funny greeting etc. When chance cards come up even numbers you choose the first option, odd you choose the second. How is your sim going to react to an unwanted advance? Even number accept, odd decline. How does your sim feel about other sims joining in on their conversation? Even they accept it, odd they do something rude to the intruder. When creating a sim get x number of dice. Assign a number to each career. Roll the dice. Or do this http://createarandomsim.com.
Find a random story/character generator and use one of those to play out a Sims life.
Choose one household that you want to have multiple generations, play that household, rotate around when you get bored of them. There is nothing that says you have to have x number of generations in an x amount of time. Cute ideas I have seen people do are challenges for children where they hunt for frogs or fish for x amount of time and who ever has the most wins the challenge and gets whatever reward (money, make over, or item) they have set out the children. Elders had to write a book and which ever one was paid the most won a new computer. Teenagers do a dive contest and which one won a new pool. Etc...etc...You can also do things like this choose an heir.
