Truth be told, scientist carreer and gardening goes quite alot hand in hand.
Also it will take less time to have the plants at home then having to go all over the world whenever you need them.
You will need both plants and potions for some more objectives like when asked to clone a serum, make tainted ones, give serum to co-worker and so on.
So in short, Im afraid you will have to get gardening if you dont want to get stuck in progress of scientist career.
