I've joked that " acquired the cooking skill" is one of the most terrifying phrases in TS4, because it's so often followed by " discovered the fire!" But it adds that element of surprise, and I like it. If I have a family I want to be super protective of, I make sure they read lots of cooking books and start off only making salads and things, and get a high quality stove before they move onto actual recipes that could potentially start fires.
Same with the Murphy bed. I can upgrade it if I really don't want it to cause problems, but overall, I like having the risk. And I got a good laugh when my first (and only, actually) Sim died from it, because the poor guy had gotten horrible luck with everything he tried in the game. It was a very fitting end for his extremely unlucky life. (Though I'm pretty sure I kept his ghost around. There might be ambrosia in his future.)
