I didn't mind the work rabbit holes and all in TS3, and find they were a step up from TS2/4 because at least you had a building that you could see in your town so you actually knew where your sim worked. And the world was open so I could easily switch to another family member or watch other residents in the world, so no, I never sat there and stared at their work building. :D
I really don't want them to open up career lots just to watch them do some animation loop like they did in the University lectures - what a bore, no wonder the students slept. LOL! I always wanted them to do Rabbit Hole markers though - those silver ball things - if we had those, then you could build your own career buildings and stick those things in, then any player created building could become a career RH. The pre-made ones were way too big and took up too much space, and being able to create our own would have added so much to the player made worlds.
Now the lots that weren't strictly career lots - the spa, the grocery, the bistro, the bookstore - yeah, I totally agree that we got short-changed and should have had functioning, open buildings. Those were definitely short cuts, and it's a shame they never really fixed that to suit players' constant requests for them to do so.
Edit: With EPs, we did get open laundry mats, consignment stores, bars and clubs, bowling alleys, generic hangouts, and more, plus the base game came with library, museum, and parks. The only difference in TS4 is that it came with some open clubs, the other open lots are the same as what came in TS3 BG.
I also just have to add that I think TS4 looks like plastic cartoon sims living in a plastic cartoon world so while it's nice some people like it, I personally find the look of TS3 to be far superior.
