Aside from the work thing, and spaceship woohoo, there are really not a lot of rabbit holes. Unlike sims 3.
The away feature sends Sims in rabbit holes especially for babies. So that is a quite common one. I put Sims 3 and 4 on equal terms with rabbit holes and with needing mods.
I don't know why those hidden lots remind me of rabbit holes too at least to get into some of them. It reminds me so much of WA with those. I think a lot of ideas from Sims 3 carried over to the Sims 4. I don't know, I don't find Sims 3 and 4 that different from each other personally in a lot of different ways. I still think Sims 2 did the best not breaking immersion for me. It was nice having time freeze so I didn't have to miss out what was happening to family members while a Sim was on a community lot.
I don't see the "away" thing as a rabbit hole at all.
As far as mods go, I played my whole time with sims 3 without mods. I didn't add NRAAS until well after I was playing sims 4. And as for 4, I only have a couple of terrain replacement mods and one to remove room buffs. That's it. I can play it just fine without mods.
