i dont get why we cant have bigger and better things in this day and age with technology being what it is. we now have games capable of huge mega-cities and small countries. not saying the sims needs to move to that, though it's interesting to wonder about. lol.
but for such a smaller scale game, i dont see what makes it so impossible to make a decent game without scaling back all the features.
just doesnt make sense to me. i wish the sims would move into the modern era, and really break some new ground. while at the same time returning to whats worked in the past. i'm on an 8 year old computer that still runs most newer games fairly well.
does this franchise really need to still run on pc's with sims 2 type specs. and no i didnt check sims 2's specs before saying this, so jump on if you must. all im saying is i think at this point they should be able to push somewhat further with technological advancement than where they been headed, and truly make an incredible game.
Yes! I so agree with this. I think there is plenty of (I wouldn't quite use this word but I can't think of a better one at the moment) blame to go around as to how we got to what The Sims 4 is. Like before in a different thread I said that players aren't entirely at fault for wanting some of the old features when EA and Maxis could've gave what they provided in a base game and 24 packs in a base game and like 8 to 10 packs instead with 14 or so left for new ideas up till now. True, we players want to see the old features again, especially if they deal in exactly what this game is for the most part which is a life simulator. There are seasons in life, pets in life, university in life. We all may not experience them the same but they are part of life and there's still so much that has yet to be done with them or improved with them. EA and Maxis simply need to find balance between delivering on the old but improved favorites and delivering new and exciting packs too.
But here what you touched on about the tech and not scaling back is what I think falls more on the players or about half us and half them. I think one thing we can all agree on is that we love The Sims. Whether we have a preference for 1, 2, 3, or 4 we love this series. We love this game so much and we want it to be the best it can be but we also want it to run on our systems no matter how outdated or below average for gaming it would be considered. Some of us, EA and Maxis included because they are catering to this to a degree, are holding the game back.
Since the release of this game the number one reason I've heard about why players love The Sims 4 goes as follows: It runs on my computer. That's nice, but that is absolutely saddening to me. That should not be a selling point, that should be a given unless you're buying a much older game trying to play it on a newer system. Any game I've ever bought I can list you all my favorite things about those games and "it runs" wouldn't be anywhere on that list unless I bought it used. So why is it that way when it comes to The Sims 4?
This is where I have to turn the blame on EA and Maxis because while true, some of us were playing on systems that couldn't handle it, some of us were playing on systems that could and were still having problems and that falls on them. They should've fixed their games and clearly they could be fixed because modders fixed them and for those who didn't want mods they had to find workarounds. The problem with this is that modders didn't make the games, EA and Maxis did and if you have a broken product it should be on you to fix said product. Instead some simmers were being directed to mods to fix issues in their game and that shouldn't have been the case.
This is where I turn back to us players because why do we keep letting them do this? I get players who truly love The Sims 4 for what it has to offer; like CAS, multitasking and emotions are the bomb to them, building is easier, smaller worlds work for them... I can get that even if it's not my experience because our reasoning for loving a game should be what it contains not how well it runs. Yet because of what we've grown to expect out of EA and Maxis and due to some of our expectations the games ability to run properly is up there right along features the game brings to the table and that's a shame. It's like a Sims game running properly is a feature like CASt or turn ons and turn offs were. Plus, it seems like somewhere the line was blurred between players having problems due to their computers and players having problems due to the game itself and that makes it easier for them to get away with scaling back or shifting focus because we all want a game that works, right?
Not enough of us who feel like they should be held accountable are holding them accountable because we're so blinded by our love for the series. We're not holding them accountable in part because we just really want a game that works for us technically. In part because we just want The Sims 5 to exist. In part because we really want to like The Sims 4. For whatever reason everyone who feels they should be treating players better is not holding them accountable and it works in EA's favor because why waste resources to fix something if you're going to keep buying anyway?
We should have a bigger and better game with today's technology and the possibilities that come with a concept like The Sims. Forget The Sims 4 having potential, The Sims as a whole will always have potential at this rate. We need to make EA and Maxis make it live up to its potential.
Appreciate the response, great read.
