Sims are leaving through the fireplace ?

Has anyone noticed this ? It happened in my vampire house my sims disappeared into the fireplace as they were leaving the house instead of using the door. Is it a bug or a feature ?!

Father Winter uses the fireplace as a portal during WinterFest. Apparently, other Sims can use it too.
