It's strange but I do think sim traits have an influence too on backfiring / how fast they learn things. When the teen guy sim experiments on the cauldron, he learns new potions pretty easily. His adult neighbor, however, doesn't. Some sims will have curses / spells backfiring more easily than others as well (given they're at the same level). What I don't know yet, though, is what exactly influences this ... or if it really is a coincidence?

I'm not sure either about sim traits. Mostly it seems like you control it better with perks. Once they get strong they need the perks to deal with the charge or they get in trouble easier... so on some sims I plan on not giving them good protective perks. I still have a lot to learn on it but my sim has all the perks for all the schools that end in saying: always succeed when Sim is in a Normal Spellcaster Charge range. Failure is greatly reduced in Charged and Overcharge states. So she's on easy street... Basically I went up one skill/perk tree (alchemy) on her then protected her when casting in other schools of magic.
I just plan on not choosing to make it that easy for Aunt Clara in the future... so she will just fail more.
