Since the volunteering is a Rabbit Hole, I keep the camera on the house itself. Normally, I hire a nanny which gives me, the player, something to do. Not this time, however. What I found very strange and a tad weird, is suddenly, about halfway through the allotted time for the parents' service to the elderly, I hear one of the toddlers giggle. I panned the camera around, thinking the parents must have returned. Nobody is on the front lawn. Yet, the child's giggle was loud enough for him to have been on the lot. Weirdness.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Yes - that happened with my toddler every time I sent her to day care. I don't think it's a glitch (I'd cleared the cache and repaired for other reasons quite recently). I think it's because they don't actually leave the lot through the normal portal (or return that way), so the kid is still sort of 'present'. All Sims make 'happy' sounds when they're happy, especially if they're asleep, and I think that's what we're hearing with the toddlers in day care.
It happens every to my toddlers go to daycare as well. I came to pretty much the same conclusion as invsiblgirl
