I can never bring myself to play with aging on. I like to take my time with my sims, and since I am not a legacy or family player, I tend to play with the same sims anyway, so no point in aging them!
As for having kids in this game, I just can't. I've tried them and I always seem to regret doing so. The only sims I've successfully 'grown' from toddlers were my favourite YA sims which I aged down for the purpose of acquiring more traits and a bit of a back story for each of them.
One thing that has changed though is I decided to stop using the reward traits (never weary, never hungry, etc). I used to buy these traits as soon as I had enough points, but now I find I prefer my sims without these. Now there are so many creative ways in the game to help with needs without turning them into simbots.
