What is the point of a sack lunch - if any at all?

I sent my teen Sim to school with the first ever sacked lunch I have ever prepared - ever. He didn't eat it - he has a spoiled sack lunch in his inventory. I only notice it when I told him to do...

I tried to take a sack lunch to work and once the sim's hungry bar became yellow, she ate it and got a happy moodlet. But as advised here, I did not give her any breakfast in order for it to work. The sack lunch solved the insufficient time for having breakfast, though. ?
