I randomly select traits for a lot of sims. I had a slob, hot headed, romantic sim awhile ago that actually turned out to be a lot of fun. I wouldn't normally use those traits, (especially not on a sim that was important to me), but I learned long ago that the less perfect my sim is, the more fun they seem to be.
I'll also purposefully start fires in a house if I'm getting bored of the decor and let most of it burn down. It's an immersive and fun way to redecorate and maybe knock off a sim or two on occasion. ;)
