Since I've figured out how to work the population controls in MC Command, I like to tamper around with that. One generation will pass with few births in my game and the next, I will allow a "baby boom". For some reason, I get a laugh out of seeing how much my town can populate and the families can really get complicated (forget family trees; I need a map!).
Yes I find rotational play gives you more scope for different stories and different sims. It won't let you get bored.
Try the taxation thing it is so fun.
