I always start with:
- Single sims, as I like to meet my sims' partners/have kids via gameplay (except if bigger household required for challenge, such as Random Legacy helpers).
- Whatever starter funds I'm given, or 0 after purchasing a lot (Rags to Riches style). Students can also apply for scholarships & loans and move into University Housing or an Apartment once they get into uni and have the funds come through.
- If they are 2nd gen or later or moving out of a shared house (like BFF/Roomies) they get an equal share of household funds based on number of sims in original household. Consecutive sims moving out get the same amount reserved for them for fairness. The last sim to leave a shared house has the funds reduced to match the other tenants, unless I think they own the house outright (ex. J Huntington III seems like a rich sim who might own the house he lives in and Marcus Flex owns the Partyhaus warehouse according to the household bio).

- Cat Lovers/Dog Lovers get a pet via the phone/PC adoption panel once I can afford a food bowl. Animal Enthusiasts might also get a pet/object creature, but in that case I might roll a die to decide the type or base it on their personality/environment.
- Sims with social traits will usually join a Club/Org/Pack of some kind.
- Ambitious sims always need standard careers due to Wants and Moods relating to this trait. Renaissance Sim aspiration goes well with the Noncommittal trait due to the job changes.
- If I start with a Story Mode sim then I randomise my answers with a 4-sided die (answers 1-3, plus skip question). I'll base their appearance on their rolled stats. Once a Story Mode sim is placed I re-enter CAS to set their prefs based on the career/skills they rolled. I might also write a family bio for them based on how I interpret the results.
