I also will cheat Cooking skill up to 2 to avoid fires because they're really not spontaneous, they're expected during the first cook.
I usually just prepare Fruit Salad and other raw dishes until they get a few levels. Fruit Salad is usually a good option on Simple Living lots because it uses Any Fruit. They might occasionally grill autonomously if a grill is on the lot/nearby, though cooking group meals and making sure there are always leftovers reduces their need to autonomously cook things.
