Alright, so I have determined you can travel to the museum, save it and then back home and back again and all the collectibles stay in the museum saved there.
I just moved my tester sim Nani Maid from the Goth's house to move in with my other tester sim Bob Builder and then had her visit the museum again and the collectibles were still there. So your sims can move around town without having to move their collectibles. And you can play rotationally while keeping your collectibles at the museum.
I'm going to switch households entirely and have one last sim go to the museum to test it out.
EDIT: You can switch households and everything and your collectibles will stay at the museum. YAY! I was so worried that none of the collectibles would save to the museum, but they do!
