Are gift boxes broken?

Not sure what they are called in English, there's a normal and a big gift box pile I use for Christmas, and there's a menu option "Open gifts together with...". In the big pile I tried several times in different games and couldn't choose this option. It was greyed out saying that my sim just performed this action. Which isn't true. The boxes were not from household inventory, they were freshly bought and placed in the house. No sim could open gifts together with others of their choice.

The smaller gift box pile worked for a while, but it also stopped working now with the same message - can't perform this action as my sim just did it. This message comes for any sim I choose to open gifts together with others.

This really bothers me as those family members that were invited over for Christmas can't open any gifts ☹️

Is there anything I missed? I did a search on the bug forum but couldn't find anything. Thank you.
