They still appear in the mod menu when you start the game, but they just don't work in game. Why would this happen after just a normal, mandatory update?

Unfortunately, it's just a thing that some mods break after every patch. Slider mods, skin details, some alpha hairs, etc. were hit hard by this particular patch because they're somehow conflicting with things that they added for werewolves. This is, alas, normal and the price we pay for using mods and CC.
Watch your favorite creators' patreons, web sites, twitters, discords, etc., for updates and cross your fingers.

@TheLittleIdot Updates can include any number of needed or helpful adjustments to the game code... including fixes. It's important to do the updates because of this. However, CC and Mods are not made by EA. Most of the more responsible and helpful makers of CC and Mods will prepare updates to their CC/Mod that adjusts for ways in which their CC/Mod was broken/effected by a patch/update of the game. I would recommend that you check the creator's websites and see if any of them have updates. They may also have something like a posted notice that they are aware of 'such-and-such' issue and that they are preparing an update to address it or something to that effect.
If you have too many to check them all, or if you don't see any notices from the creators about updates/breaks in function, you can troubleshoot the game to find out which Mod(s)/CC ie/are causing the issue for you, then you can remove that Mod/CC from your game for now and let the creator(s) know about the issue and wait to see if they prepare an update to fix it.
How to troubleshoot to find what Mod/CC(s) is causing the issue, if that it the cause of your issue:
SpoilerTry moving the Mods folder from your "The Sims 4" folder [Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4] to your desktop (save it for reference) and delete the localthumbcache.package file in your “The Sims 4” folder. Then check in a new game save to see if this issue is still occurring. You can test without saving in order to identify which CC/Mods are causing the issue, then remove or add updated version(s) of the Mod/CC causing the issue. There is a list of known broken Mods/CC at this link: https://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/1000307/broken-updated-mods-cc-june-14-2022-werewolves-patch#latest
Edit: Oops... sorry, @xochiquetzl_xkvn ...we must have been preparing our responses at the same time, as when I posted mine I could then see that you had also posted. I apologize for any repeats of info! 🤭

This totally helped me, that link to the broken mods led me to Cmar's hotspot control fixer. They all work now! Thank you so much!
