I was editing a rejected book for a freelance gig, and my sim might have gotten up to use the bathroom and stopped writing. When that happened I don't have the option to continue editing, and I don't have the book in my inventory to submit it either.
This happened to me with a presentation board, I lost it because I went elsewhere and didn't put it in my inventory. Sometimes items can be restored in the inventory if sim returns to where they left them, but I don't know exactly how that works.
Sounds like your sim got distracted mid-task! Try checking the mailbox or computer; sometimes Adxfreework gigs glitch, and the book might have disappeared.
