game did not give me any money to start
When I finished making my household and went to play it will not let me buy a house as it gave me 0 simoleons and I am unable to do anything

Did you create your Sims from scratch, or did you download a household from the gallery?
There is a workaround when that happens. After making the sim, when you get to the map screen to place them, open the command window and use the "freerealestate on" cheat to get them into a lot. Once there, you can use the "kaching" and "motherlode" cheats to give them enough simoleons to play.
