game freezes to a sudden dark greyed out screen

Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? its completely random. i can be playing the game for an extended amount of time, ill go to do anything & the screen just greys out to a really low light & freezes, with the sun on the calendar still actively shining in the bottom left hand corner.
What happens when the bug occurs? screen greys out to low light & freezes all keyboard & mouse response. ive tried with & without mods, & this inevitably happens at least twice a night. i just started experiencing this, this week. ive done nothing different.
What do you expect to see? a normally functioning screen.

Please describe the patch or change you made. started with the most recent update 1.97.62.1020 as far as im aware.
screen greys out to low light as stated above. freezes to non-responsive, & i have to force ctrl+alt+del & then the game goes to a blinding white screen for about 5 min then allows me to see my bottom bar, but doesnt minimize like normal when i press my windows key.
it stalls & if i try to right click, exit from the bottom bar, it brings up save & exit, but crashes shortly after i either try to press anything to no avail, & i have to show my control panel on top to get out of the freeze & just wait for the game to crash, bc that doesnt always work either when its frozen it just forces me back into the games frozen screen and minimizes my bottom windows bar.
its happened 3 times in the past 2 days.
whats strange is that before it switches to a frozen white screen, the sun on the calendar in the bottom left hand corner shines & moves on its own just fine, but all other functions are non-responsive.
