Yes, I figured out that I could change my sim count, but I'm not working from an especially powerful laptop and thus would like to remain in the 80 range. I'm asking how I can remove them from the "my households" and back into the other households where they were from originally - if possible?

With the My Households tab active in Manage Households, just click the little heart on the lower right of the household portraits. That will move the household from the My Households tab to the Other tab. Once in the Other tab, the sims in the household will no longer be included in the Sim Count. The sims will also then be marked as unplayed and the little heart on the portrait will change from solid to an outline.
