How Do You Deal With Mods?

For those of you who use mods, how do you deal with them being broken constantly with each update? It's not like EA updates this game once or twice a year. There have been 3 updates since I started playing and it hasn't even been a half a year. Currently, I have 2 mods that look like they've been broken since Dec 19, 2023 (For Rent EP) and appear to be abandoned. They are mods I relied on a lot.

Mortem - For realistic funerals

Nicky Clem's Life Insurance Mod

I have been without them now for 2 months. Today's update seriously broke a mod that I can't mention because when I tried to post it earlier, the site removed the name. The initials are (WW). I am sure a lot of people use it.

So all of you who use mods, how do you deal with all the chaos, especially if you have like 100 mods installed? How do you keep track of the insanity? Yeah, I get the Better Exceptions will give you a report of all the tuning problems but after you've put those mods in a separate folder, how do you keep up with finding out if they've been fixed? And if they haven't what do you do? Losing Life Insurance, not so terrible. I just use the money cheat. But losing Mortem has been tough. Honestly, the Grim Reaper is lame.

I guess I'm looking for a little encouragement because I'm a little bummed right now.

Thanks.

  • I have my EA app set to not update my games automatically. So on patch day I have the choice of upgrading or not. If You don't want to upgrade then use the 3 bar menu in the upper left corner of the app and set it to go offline. Sims 4 launches without the new updates applied.

Then I watch the the updates in Mod/CC Issues to see which mods are broken and I don't ever update until my mod list is cleared or updates. I may not get the new features right away, but I don't get the big headaches either.

That’s a good idea !!  I disabled  the auto update but when a patch is available I can only click update instead of play. Didn’t know we can circumvent this by going offline. Thanks.

For those of us who use lots of mods, we are extremely organized and may even use a Mod that keeps all of them organized for us. We are constantly checking for updates when new patches and updates are released because this will always happen. For the (WW) mod in question, it will always update whenever there is a new patch or game update. You can go back to the website to get the most current updated files. Make sure to follow the instructions when using the mods so they will work properly and clear your cache. I hope this helps a little! Don't give up! I enjoy mods and what they can add to the gameplay. I would also check the websites of the two broken mods to see if they are updated or still in use. Last thing: Don't forget to vet your sources and be careful when downloading mods. The recent cybersecurity issue affected many players across multiple devices so make sure to do your due dilligence and check your mods and computer system for malware.

  • Hullo! Apart from the bit where I'm really busy if a lot of mods broke, maintaining the AHQ Broken/Updated Mods list and following what modders are saying about the changes, I have a few go-to's while mods are out of commission:

    • Pare back on what mods I use in general. I have almost no hair CC since last time hair all broke.
    • Play a mod-free save. I was about to dig up an old favorite of those a couple of weeks ago, then it turned out mods were even more broken than usual!
    • Play a different game, pick out a new book to read, or start a new show. I have finally succeeded in not being destroyed within a couple of eras in King mode in Civilization VI.
    • Attack my to-do list. That's what I did in December. I have decidedly more empty shelf space than before, which is goals because we want to move to a smaller place.

Yeah, what everyone else said. I have the EA app set to not upgrade my game until my mods clear, and I lay out my mod folder with the subfolders all named after the creator so it's easier to find the updates. And I use Luth's AWESOME list.

  • Some mods are more easily broken than others, I tend to try to keep those to a minimum and from creators I know update fast. Another tip is to use the mods on CF, they will tell you which are ready to update. Check in on the Luth's broken-mod-thread often, as it makes updating faster and simpler. Most of all, keep one save for playing mod-free. For me that is a basic build save, so I go into build and create sims-mode until enough of my mods are updated for me to return to ordinary play.

Luth's list is a lifesaver when it comes to managing my (too many) mods, so MASSIVE shout-out to @luthienrising for putting so much time and effort into maintaining that and other relevant threads. Honestly, if you're struggling to handle the constant rollout of breakages and updates, I highly recommend subscribing to posts in that feed. That's what I did and I never looked back. Between that and Scarlet's List that tracks the status of mods, I somehow manage to stay sane with a sizeable mods folder.
