mods folder crashing game

I know this name is really generic, but please bear with me. I haven't been able to come across anyone else having this issue.

My mods folder seems to be crashing my game - not the mods or CC itself.

I cleared out my mods folder a few weeks ago as I had a corrupted file, and over the past couple of days have been slowly re-adding my favourite CC and mods. I test everything in-game right after I download it. (I add files from a specific creator, test them in-game, then use Sims 4 Mod Manager to remove the items I don't want/need and re-test with my finished folder)

I've been playing for a long time and using mods for a long time, so when my game started crashing (consistently not responding at launch) I removed my folders one-by-one to find the issue, but it crashed at every reboot until I had 0 files or folders left in my mods folder, and that's the only way the game will run.

I've tested several files and script mods randomly, nothing will work. It comes down to:

Mod folder empty: Working

Mod folder with quite literally any file at all: Crash

It doesn't seem to be down to a specific outdated or corrupted file, my game simply won't run with a file in the mods folder. I'm so confused and frustrated. Has anyone else had this issue?

I have also completely wiped and reinstalled the Sims, so deleting the mods folder and launching to create a new one hasn't seemed to make a difference.

Sorry if I haven't explained myself well, here. I'm just so confused!

[EDIT: I play on a Mac, I always forget to mention that]

  • @growlm0nI’m seeing little cloud symbols in that first picture. Are you using an iCloud backup, and if so, did you make sure all your Mods were allowed to sync and that they were set to store locally before trying to open the game? (Or even better, remove from iCloud entirely) I use Dropbox rather than iCloud but have had similar issues.

  • @growlm0n We recently had a case here where a non-Curseforge mod manager had renamed someone's files in a way that the game couldn't see them right. Could you please post a screenshot of your Mods folder?

Of course, thank you so much for responding.

So this is my wiped Mod folder, very standard, I don't have anything in it right now, and then there's how it typically looks when I have folders in it (I wasn't very far into redownloading when the game started crashing) And I'll add the inside of one of my folders as well. I don't use sub-folders obviously, but just for the sake of clarity.

The crashing started after I added the Aira-CC stuff, which had never caused a problem in my game before. I took the folder back out immediately but the game continued to crash on launch. I wiped my Sims 4 folder and only reloaded my Saves and that was fine, but as soon as I started adding the mods back in, I had the same crash issue, no matter what file or folder it was.

Better Exceptions flagged one of LittleMsSam's package mods yesterday, which I removed, and it hadn't caused any in-game issues.

All files and all folders were working absolutely fine in-game before I added the Aira-CC ones. Between downloading them and adding them to my Mods folder, I did connect to the Gallery in my game for the first time in months, though I doubt that's relevant, but just to give all the info I can.

    Thanks so much again

  • A very minor issue, but, again, just want to include anything that could possibly be relevant. Since I reset my Sims 4 folder my menu in-game is much bigger. So is the sim profile and task bar, which is really annoying, but also something I can just deal with haha. I just wanted to include it in case there's a fix.

oh yeah I didn't even think of that! it hasn't been an issue for me so far in using mods but I'll check it out and update!

You are a saint! This worked! I've always had the cloud symbol beside my folders but it hasn't caused issues before, that I've noticed, but downloading them and storing them locally fixed everything! Which is such an obvious solution in hindsight but I genuinely would have overlooked it! Thank you so, so much!

@growlm0n Glad it helped! Took me hours to figure out what was happening the first time Dropbox screwed up my game as well.
