There is a blue flashing/pulsing box in the bottom left-hand corner of my screen and when I try to open a household, it just takes me back to the select world screen. There was a box when I first updated that told me something wasn't at the recommended setting (though I don't know what it was) and i clicked what it recommended and then got a warning about poor play quality... I don't know what is wrong.

I removed the mods I had added and it is still doing it. Also, it was the setting for auto-scale. This time, I kept current settings and the blue box is still there with me unable to open a household.

It is possible that your save is corrupted if you saved in that state. You might need to go back to a backup https://sims4.crinrict.com/eng/2014/09/recover-backup-save-game/
I tried both of those fixes and neither worked...

yes, I did. I am not sure what's going on.
I was able to get rid of the blue box, but it still will not open any households. I click to play and it takes me back to the main residential worlds screen.
I also notice this when I am in build mode. The icons, etc are odd? I don't know how to explain, so I have attached a screenshot
Did you put any mods back ? This very much looks like outdated mods still.

My game was working. Then it was giving me insufficient graphics warnings. I was able to fix that. Now it won't load my game. I made a post, though I think it was in the mods and cc forum on accident, about what its doing and what I've tried. no mods installed, restarted laptop, repaired game many times, unistalled EA and reinstalled, and now am reinstalling the game itself. I had just "updated" the game with 3 new packs I purchased, and now it won't load and will only spin the green plum-bomb thing.
k_kretch1993 Is this with an empty Mods folder? If so, please try making a fresh user folder -- rename the folder Mods is inside of. If you still have issues with a fresh user folder, please let me know so I can get you to the right place for support.
