A pic of the entrance to the house would be helpful to help you, so if you can, please do. But what it sounds like from your description is that something is blocking taller sims where shorter sims can get through. I've seen that problem before but it's been associated with stairs and the builder did not leave enough space for headroom. I've also seen a couple cases where platforms were causing the problem if they were too high. What looks like it should work at times doesn't work, so take a look at how the entrance is configured and if there is an object over the door, try moving it. If you have stairs, is there a roof over it that may be too low. Change the height of the platform if one is present. Try changing the foundation height. Things like that.
