If you have them living in an apartment then that is normal. The landlord gets added to the relationship of every sim living in the apartment automatically regardless if you sims ever met them or not. It might not happen immediately for all the sims but most times it does. The key is the venue type, in this case that would be Apartment (or is it Residential - Apartment). It has nothing to do with visiting another lot. If the home lot of the sims is anything else like University Housing , then you should not be getting a landlord at all. So I suggest you check the assigned venue type by visiting the sim's home lot in build mode. The University Housing venue type won't let you do that with sims living on the lot that and is ok but all of the other residential types will let you go to build mode and you can check the venue type.
I have all my dorms set to residential btw so they are just like any other residential lot and they work fine so if your lot is set to Apartment, you might want to set the venue to just Residential. Then the sims won't have a landlord. Only issue is when you move in and have to make sure you have enough money to buy the lot. I'm not sure what happens if you change the venue type after moving sims in though as I haven't tried it.
Hope this helps.
