Sims 4: Cats Ignore Needs

I am at a bit of a loss on my most recent Sims 4 file.

My sim adopted a cat but she needed constant attention despite him being home all day and interacting with her between nearly every task he did. She kept running away so I thought perhaps getting a second cat could help. They refuse to interact, rarely even enter the same room, follow my sim constantly to the point of ignoring their own needs, and even seem to be struggling to use shared objects. I get that pets need care but at this rate he barely has time to eat or sleep much less work or socialize himself.

The first cat kept following him until she would fall over and pass out, after a few times of this she ran away again. The second has to be physically called into the bathroom when its litterbox need gets high enough to offer the 'What's Wrong?' option and has to be called to eat whenever her hunger rises. The first cat uses the litterbox and food dish without issue and the second never gives any indication of having difficulty reaching them.

I have tried to reset them with the debug option but haven't noticed any change. I used to play with the pets expansion a lot and I never remember it being this bad. Is there something I am just missing?

  • I've had issues with this and they drove me to use Twisted Mexi's AllCheats to enable playable pets when they start misbehaving, and eventually to download Bienchen's sanity for pets mod.

My worst experience was in the household with 3 cats and 2 dogs, none of whom could find a food dish or litterbox by themselves. The dogs used to be able to go potty by themselves, but I fed them an age-down treat and no amount of training re-enabled that ability so they also needed to be told to go potty constantly. Also there was an update at some point that caused all the pets to constantly fight each other. I honestly abandoned that save.

I also took to locking the doors to all cats so my stupid cats would stop running away because no amount of petting and playing prevented them from running away, but Bienchen's mod helps. With the mod your pets will actually interact with each other and fill social that way. (Seriously, if you make your pets playable without Bienchen's mod, you pet your cat and their Affection/Social goes green, and then the red arrows start and it drops rapidly.)
