It adds to my sims' personality to see a certain magazine on their coffeetable, and even better to know they can read it. A good thing is that the magz can be bought from any kind of community lot, retail not involved :) (I think the creator is named something like thesimlibrarian)

@GalacticGal For historical gameplay, you might want to try Fashion Authority by Lot51. It lets you assign outfits based on just about anything. (Jobs, location, etc.) I use it to give my teen sims school uniforms for high school.
Not sure if everyone knows this one or not, but one of my recent favorites is SimSim Online store. It lets you order various items from your sims phone. Its really helpful for things you can't normally get in build/buy mode or order from the computer (e.g. the herbalism stuff from Outdoor Retreat)
