If you check the date on the save file on your console, does it look like your game isn't saving since the last time you played?

It's not sims I recently made, it's sims that have been around for a while and all of a sudden the sims and the contents of the house are gone. I save often and also have a backup save

It sounds like you may be seeing some "culling" in your game- culling is the removal of households from the game for performance-management and game stability.
