My left shift key has recently broken on my MacBook Air and now I can't open the cheats menu. is there a way I can change it so I can use the right shift key rather than the left?

The cheat console should come up using the right Shift key too. I just tested it on my MacBook Pro and it works. Have you changed any default keyboard settings on your Mac in the past that may have stopped it from working?
If you need to, you could maybe enable the Accessibility Keyboard? System Preferences > Accessibility > Keyboard > Accessibility Keyboard.
Alternatively, there are 3rd party apps available that enable you to remap your keyboard.
