@lilyinsimland If you could tell us more about your Mac, it would be a big help. If you go to the Apple menu and select About This Mac, can you copy/paste the information about the model and the graphics/GPU installed?
For this specific problem it looks similar to an issue that some other players have had that was improved by switching from Full Screen mode to Windowed mode (you can do this in the game options after you launch The Sims). Once in Windowed mode you can double-click the title bar of the winow to expand it to fill the screen. Does this work for you?

Processor 3.1 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
Graphics Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200 1536 MB
I can definitely try that, for the moment I've also tried repairing the game and I'm currently resetting to factory settings as well.
