Gaming on MacBook Pro using external SSD?

I would like to see if I am able to use an external ssd for my Macbook pro i7,  for playing the sims 4. I play the game with tons of cc and I know at a point I will run out of space. Therefore I am looking at solutions. I also want to start using my MacBook for recording my gameplay and video editing so I will need all the space I can get.

My question is pretty big since I do not know specs or logistics of power and hardware it takes to run such a big game as the sims 4.

What size external ssd would be sufficient enough to run sims 4 with cc through origins?

Would I be able to only run my mods folder through the ssd and keep the base game on the computer memory?

Would I need a capture card for trying to screen record and add VoiceOver to my gameplay?

Any information would truly be appreciated

Please can you provide more information about your Mac. Instructions on how to do so and what to provide here - http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-Mac/READ-FIRST-Sims-4-Mac-Help-Guides-and-Troubleshooting/m-p/4612396/highlight/true#M162

You can install the base game and all packs on an external provided you go into the Origin settings and select the external as the install location.

You cannot store the Sims 4 folder where your saves, CC and other user files are located on an external drive as the file path must be Users > [your user account] > Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 but you could try these steps for syncing saves across multiple Macs using a cloud service. Just ignore the instructions on setting up the saves on the second Mac.
