Is it possible to put Sims 4 game into iCloud Drive?

OK, so I've done tons of looking into these message boards, but have yet to find anything that answers my particular situation.

I want to get the game off my computer for more space for other things. I'm aware I can't move EA folder unless I take the Symlink route, which I'm not, I will be leaving those files locally on my computer. However, the game itself, I will move.

First thought was to put to move the game to my 2 TB external drive, which is cool--but two things came to mind:

1) I have to reformat my drive so Origin recognizes it, and I have to move everything off my hard drive before reformatting. I can do it, just don't want to take the time.

2) I have to pull my hard drive out every time I play the game. Not horrible, but if I could avoid, even better.

SO... how can I move the game to iCloud Drive? (And I have turned off syncing to my Mac through Desktop and Documents. Everything will just be on the iCloud Drive.)  Is this possible? Are there any drawbacks? And if possible, how do I do it (because Origin doesn't recognize it either)?

Also, I have more than enough room on my iCloud Drive for the Sims 4 game and packs to be there, so no worries there.

Are you sure your iCloud isn't already being stored locally? It only moves stuff to the cloud when the internal storage is getting full and you have optimise storage enabled. You could maybe set up an external drive on your wireless network and try and point Origin to there as an installation folder. If you have network problems it wouldn't really help though.

How about getting a 128Gb thumb drive just for the game? You can get really small ones that would do the job.

Thanks for such the quick response. I think I understand what you're saying. My thought process was it's possible for my local storage and iCloud to be two separate entities, when in fact--it can never be that, not fully anyway. I was trying to use iCloud as an external storage and pull out Sims 4 game files when needed.  I now understand iCloud is a sync solution, not a storage solution.

To just make things simple, I'm going to take your advice with the 128GB thumb drive. Last thing-- I don't ever have to worry about "losing" the game/application with a thumb drive right? If something happens with the thumb drive, I can always go back through Origin, right, and re-download? Still trying to understand the concept.

Yes absolutely. Of course it's possible the install could become corrupted if the drive isn't ejected properly or fails but then you're not losing your game data, just the installation. The game is tied to your Origin account, not where it's installed to 🙂
