Glad you can see the funny side of this annoying problem 🙂
Which exact model Mac do you have? Apple > About This Mac. This happened to me a while back, I have no idea how, but I had turned on an accessibility zoom. I ended up taking my Mac to the genius bar and they just turn it off in the setting (it was super embarrassing). I would recommend going into system settings and checking your accessibility settings even if you don't remember ever turning it on!
@Bluebellfloraof course, ya gotta see the funny side! idk what ive done tbh but i updated the software of my laptop and it's fixed it funnily enough?? but it'll be good to know any solutions should it happen again 🙂 I have a MacBook Pro 2021 with a M1 chip 🙂

Updating the OS would have reset and fixed any corrupted settings which may have been a cause. Check the Accessibility settings too, as @mawrtyr mentioned. - @Bluebellflora what would i be looking for in accessibility ?

System Settings > Accessibility > Zoom
Apple have great help pages on their website - https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mh40579/13.0/mac/13.0
