Re: 🛠️ Creating a symlink in macOS to store the Sims 4 folder on an external drive

@nep_deByrd

Create a symlink to a different location. These instructions are to an external drive but could be adapted - https://bluebellflora.com/saving-your-sims-4-folder-to-an-external-drive/

You cannot simply just choose where to store the user data for the game because it will always look in Documents > Electronic Arts for a Sims 4 folder. If there isn't one there it will just create a new one.

    Did this work for you? Its a few years later and it seems the original issue is still not resolved.

    @Bluebellflora Hi, i understand that this post is from a couple years ago but i am having the same problem as the original user. I do not want to pay for more iCloud storage just because Sims 4 is taking up so much.
    I looked at the link you attached and i was wondering if there is any other way to change the location without having to store The sims 4 in an external drive or in iCloud?
    Thank you.

    No unfortunately not if your internal storage is getting full. You can create the symlink for any location though, it’s just a matter of getting the file path correct.

    I am having the same problem as the original poster. I tried following the Windows instructions and it said there was a syntax error. Any ideas?

    Bluebellflora Hello, Im currently trying to make it so my game puts my saves in google drive so i can access my most recently updated saves from multiple devices. I'm trying to follow instructions with the path to google drive but terminal is responding "operation not permitted" and "permission denied." I literally just got this laptop so there's no other admin, and there aren't any popups asking for my permission. Is it a lost cause cause google drive is different or something? im doing "mv ~/Documents/Electronic\ Arts /Volumes/GoogleDrive-myemailatgmaildotcom/" (thats the name my computer gave me when copying it's pathname in finder)

    This is something I have been meaning to test for so long, years in fact, but never got round to it. I'd be really interested if you get this to work as I find the way Google Drive works across devices so helpful. The only hiccup I can think of is when Google Drive has delayed syncing on one device. This can result in duplicate files/folders in one location if it tries to sync a file/folder with the same name. It will append a number to the file/folder name to avoid losing any data. If this happens to your saves folder or an individual save the game will ignore it and not load it.

    But anyway, using Google Drive in Finder and installing using the default settings actually stores the drive directly in your user account:

    So the file path in your command would be:

    mv ~/Documents/Electronic\ Arts ~/My\ Drive/

    Please come back and let me know how you get on 🙂
