Thanks for checking in!
As I played more yesterday, I realized the game had entirely reset. All families created after about November were no longer available and I got award notifications for things I had previously done before (e.g., level 10 in a skill).
After starting with a new family and playing for several hours yesterday, I saved and closed the program before bed. When I opened the program today, it had again reset and my new family is gone. I'm not sure what is causing this problem; I downloaded the most recent update, but played several times since then without issue. It seems as though this has come out of the blue.
There doesn't seem to be much point in playing a game if progress isn't saved!
I did some more investigating. I am unable to load from saved files (and yesterday I was unable to "save as;" I could only save by exiting to the main menu and saving before I did so.
Today I didn't have the option to load a saved file until I created a new Sim. When I moved her in and went back to the main menu, I again had the load saved game option. I attempted to load the file with the time/date stamp from last night, but when I did, it loaded the world with the Sim I had created this morning.

I did attempt to remove save files, as suggested. When I opened the game, I received the message that
the save game I was attempting to load was saved with a newer version of the sims 4 than is currently installed. The main menu looks just as it has since the latest update, so I'm not sure what that's about. This message continues to display even after I returned the files to their original location.
Another clue! When I attempted to compress the file, per your suggestion, I was unable to do so. I received an error message that "file not found or no read permission."
The file name displaying when that happened is 0xe5ee7f03!0x000501b83abc1195.hhi
