Inventory items not appearing and no water or fire particles

I have two glitches that started happening around the same time. Firstly, items in my Sims' inventory don't appear at all. This glitch also happens with storage items. This is particularly annoying ...

The solution was stupidly simple; I repaired the game using the "repair game" function in Origin. I'm sure this won't be the last time someone has a problem like this, so at least someone will be able to find this simple solution when they Google the problem.
