Kitchen Problems - Can't cook

I built my sims a new house but they won't serve meals or do anything with the fridge or stove. I've expanded the room and deleted items and moved lights to make sure that nothing is blocking the path. They will eat quick meals like cereal from the fridge but will not do anything else. They won't clean items out of the fridge even! I don't know how to fix it.
