My sim can't use the microwave!

I am playing the Sims 4 and my microwave is placed on counter that clearly has space and my sim can get to it. but when i click it to microwave oatmeal or any other meal, my sim will just wave there as if she can't walk over to it!  i've deleted the microwave and bought a new one, and it doesn't help. i've tried putting it on the kitchen island counters, and it doesn't help. PLEASE HELP!!!!
