@holyjenni You can try repairing: open your Origin game library, right-click on the Sims 4 icon, and select Repair.
However, this kind of issue is usually caused by a broken mod. Try removing all careers-related mods, and delete localthumbcache.package as well. Then see whether your sims can go to work. You don't have to save your progress; this is just to confirm whether the problem is one of those mods. If it is, you can start adding them back and testing until you find out which one.
If removing the careers-related mods doesn't help, remove all the mods, delete localthumbcache again, and test. If you have a lot of mods, you can use the 50/50 method to sort through them.
