New Computer

I'm going to be buying a new computer with the money I got for Christmas. My current computer is extremely laggy with TS4, mostly due to integrated graphics. I'm fairly certain I need one with a dedicated graphics card, and I think I found one.

Here's my current computer specs:

Lenovo Ideapad
Processor - Intel Core i5-1035 CPU @ 1.00GHz 1.19 GHz
RAM 8.00 GB

Graphics - Intel UHD Graphics
Storage (Hard Drive) - 930 GB (I think - found this info under System-Storage in Settings), 228 GB used

This would be the new computer:
Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3
Processor - AMD Ryzen 5
RAM - 8 GB
Graphics - NVIDIA GEForce RTX 3050 Ti
1920 x 1080 Screen Resolution
Storage - SSD 256 GB

I'm not sure which of these are important or not. I know the new one has better graphics, which is what I need, but looks like it also has less storage space. I'm sure I do have some old apps/games that I don't run anymore that will not be on the new pc. My Sims folder is a total of 86 GB. I play with several mods and cc. So that's definitely within the requirements (which says I only need to have around 50 GB dedicated to TS4

This one is in my price range, so I don't want any suggestions for a more expensive one. And yes, I do need a laptop not a desktop. Like I said, I think just my graphics need the upgrade. When running a system check to see if my computer will run TS4, it always comes up with graphics being a possible problem.

I think it will be a good upgrade but I wanted to double check before I buy it. Please let me know if you think it will help my game's performance. The lag is absolutely horrible most of the time. And I also like to try and work some at the same time while playing. I work online, so I often have one half of the screen with a browser (Google Chrome) and the other half with TS4. But many times, the game will lag even if it is the only thing open.

Thanks so much for your advice!

Thank you so much for reassuring me.  I'll go with this computer, even with the low storage. There are lots of other ways to get more storage, and I have 1 TB on my OneDrive account, so I don't think that will be a problem. And like I said, there are many things (apps, old documents, etc. that I don't use that are on my old computer.

I'm excited to get a new computer!

    Thanks again.

  • @MomRushTX  Other than the low storage, the laptop should do quite well running Sims 4: it should handle ultra graphics settings with some room to spare.  A 256 GB drive will have more like 225-230 GB of usable space due to how it's formatted, and you're already using that much on your current computer.  The 50 GB requirement is for the game's program files (and maybe a little extra space for user files), not for an 86 GB user folder.  But if you can cut that back, or you plan on not transferring other data from your old computer, you might be fine.

To be clear, it's not strictly necessary to have a larger drive if you're careful.  It's just more convenient to not need to be careful.  I have both Sims 3 and Sims 4 installed on a 250 GB drive, but that's not my main computer and I don't have a large amount of user content to go with the games' program files.

For the storage, if you want me to look for something with a 500 GB SSD, just let me know your budget and country.  But it's possible that this laptop is significantly cheaper than the next-best option available anywhere, so I don't want to make any promises.

  • Hi new to posting here. I have a question about a new computer as well. Would like to buy a new one for my daughter to play sims 4 on. The one I am looking at has these specs....would this work with sims 4? Not looking to spend a ton...this one is about $800, if there is something you may recommend around that price that would be helpful too. Thank you so much.

@407f9e30583768fb  This laptop is more than good enough for Sims 4.  You can do a little better though, both in terms of price and build quality.  The Ideapad is Lenovo's lowest-end gaming laptop, and while it's not going to just break, it isn't as well-made as the Legion or certain other brands' options.  For example:

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-tuf-gaming-15-6-laptop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-3050-512gb-ssd-eclipse-gray/6512281.p?skuId=6512281

Among these, I'd probably go with the HP because it's the highest quality overall, even if the margin is small.  Conveniently, it also has 16 GB RAM instead of 8.  While 8 is enough for Sims 4 and typical everyday use, and the memory in all of these could be upgraded at a later point, it's nice to not need to do so.

If you have more questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Thank you so much for the helpful info...I will definitely check out your recommendations and probably go with one of those.

  • Hi there,

You were so very helpful with my question awhile back and had decided to buy the HP that you recommended. Unfortunately, as I am slow and waited when I clicked the link you provided (I assume you can see our previous thread) the price went up from just under $800 to just over a $1000. Just a little more then we want to spend....would this HP computer work for SIMS?

Thank you so much for your help with all of this! Also, when we get the computer...I am totally illiterate when PCs. Can you recommend a go site for a tutorial on how to transfer all important files and migrate her game from her tower pc to the laptop?

    Thanks again!

@407f9e30583768fb  This option would still be fine, but an RTX 3050 ti is around 10-20% faster in gaming than the 6500M in this laptop.  The latter should still be able to run Sims 4 on ultra settings, just not by a wide margin.

If you want other good options, I'm not seeing any with 16 GB RAM for a similar price, at least not from the standard vendors.  But I did find some quality models with a 3050 ti and 8 GB RAM:

    [stupid long Amazon link]

It's also available for a lower price from a third-party seller if you're comfortable with that.

    Speaking of third-party sellers:

    https://www.amazon.com/HP-Keyboard-Enlarged-Touchpad-15-fb0028nr/dp/B09X2B5TYJ

I normally don't recommend these sellers outright just because I don't like to take chances.  On the other hand, people who have Prime subscriptions can usually get their issues solved with a little persistence, so perhaps that's a reasonably-low risk in your mind.
