not selecting- icon next to cursor?

When i got this game it started working perfectly. After a few hours i saved got up and left it. Upon returning there was a settings icon next to my curosr and it wouldn't select anything in ther game. I thought it might be a glitch so i evicted the family and reinstalled them elsewhere where the problem continued only now it has a human icon next to the cursor. can some one help im out of ideas and i've only had it a week.
