I can't seem to redo the bug either.

Only other thing I can think of was that his emotional state was confident.

After I went back and loaded the game and had the lot trait break everything again, everything seems to work normal. His emotional state was Fine though.
I will mess around with it more.

No mods or CC.

Maybe the items were glitched.

Just had the same problem, in the starter apartment in the spice district. Everything broke, and my sim spent ages trying to repair the toilet. And then I remembered it was unbreakable, and maybe also unrepairable. After exiting the game, still no luck, and repairing the same toilet for almost one sim day, I gave up. Oh so annoying! I am just glad I didn't also buy unbreakable stove and fridge... Too bad the gremlins also go through the unbreakable stuff, it would be a nice challenge to upgrade everything to avoid the gremlins. 

Please, at least make unbreakable objects repairable.

EDIT used moo, but no other cheats. Playing on my MacBook pro, latest game update. No mods. 

Does it happen reproducibly or was it just that one time ? I couldn't duplicate the issue at the time of the OPs post so there must be more to it than just the lot trait.

Do you happen to have a save before it happened and it happens again if you try on that ?

I just opened the game again, same save as when I left it a few hours ago. It was 9 pm, so I didn't have to wait that long. My sim went to sleep, and the gremlins came around midnight. Once again, I could not repair the toilet. I saved the game just before my sim went to bed, and I took another save while my sim were trying to repair the toilet. Cant find the saves on my mac though, or I would have uploaded them..

This time, no cheats.

Made a new game, new sim. Did one thing - bought the unbreakable toilet. When the gremlins came that night, the toilet did not break. Maybe because I bought it before the first gremlin attack? The other save, the one I originally had problems with, I bought the unbreakable toilet between the first and second gremlin attack. Dont know if that makes the difference though, but at least it explains why no one can duplicate the bug. 

There should be a  Documents\Electronic Arts\ folder somewhere on your mac. Try searching for saves and see if you find the folder. Would be good to have your broken save.

I had to edit the extension to jpg to be able to upload the files. I believe this is my saves. Number 5 is the one before the gremlin attack, and number 4 is the one were my sim is desperately trying to fix her toilet. Let me know if this didn't work.
