Re: Sims 4 - 'There is a problem with your games setup. Please reinstall your game'

@LASimsdesign  A dxdiag is always appreciated, even if it turns out not to have any helpful information.  Yours lists a few generic Windows errors, so please start with a couple of basic checks of your Windows system files:

  • Hit Windows key-X
  • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
  • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes, and enter
  • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here
  • After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key-X again
  • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator)”
  • Inside the window, copy and paste “sfc /scannow” without quotes, and enter
  • Post the message you receive here

Restart your computer, hit Windows key-i, select Update & Security, and click the box to check for updates.  If any install, restart again afterwards.

Since you've already reinstalled once, and it didn't help, please do a clean uninstall and reinstall of both Sims 4 and Origin or the EA App.  If you have a third-party antivirus running, please disable it during this entire process, up through the point where you try to play Sims 4 after reinstalling it.

  • Put aside your Sims 4 folder in Documents\Electronic Arts and rename it to something that doesn't include the words "Sims 4."
  • Download Revo Uninstaller (the free version is fine) from here.
  • Launch Revo, select Sims 4 from the list, and click Uninstall.
  • Once the game is uninstalled, select "Moderate" under "scanning modes," and click Scan.
  • Review the list, in case there's something you want to save; otherwise, click Select All, and then Delete.
  • Close Revo, and restart your computer.

Next, uninstall whichever game launcher you use, also with Revo.  I don't have specific instructions, but it's fairly straightforward.  Just make sure you do NOT delete the folder where you've installed other EA games, if you have one; this would be named Origin Games or EA Games by default.

If you do want to keep using Origin, you can find a download link here:

https://answers.ea.com/t5/Origin-Client-Web-Technical/Downloading-and-installing-Origin-Windows-and-Mac/m-p/11915666

When you reinstall Sims 4, please create a new folder on the root level of C.  For example, C:\Games is fine, but don't use C:\Program Files\Games.

@th6_plyr  This has worked for a couple other players who posted back with updates, so it's worth trying.

If it doesn't help you, please let me know, and please also clarify whether you're getting this exact error ("there is a problem with your game's setup, please reinstall") or something else.

Are there any other fixes to this, I've done every last thing I could find online for this, and still nothing. I'm usually pretty tech-savvy so this has been making me really angry. I'm getting the exact error you said and my game runs through Steam. I've reinstalled EA with Revo alongside Sims 4. I've uninstalled all mods/cc, I've used CClean, I've disabled my antivirus. I don't think its a Steam problem as no other Steam game is doing this... only Sims 4. I've repaired my files 90x, uninstalled n reinstalled 8 times, scanned it and everything. I'm not sure what else to do :T . Every solution I've found online hasn't worked either.

  • so, i did manage to fix it myself, and it WAS a steam problem! my stubbornness was the cause. haha. switching to an origin owned account instead of steam owned fixed it almost immediately

  • @reifan55 How'd you do that? I've uninstalled, reinstalled, updated etc. EA App, the game itself, Windows, drivers over and over for over a month and nothing's worked. I thought it might be an EA Play issue, but whatever "solution" regarding that hasn't worked, either. I purchased Sims 4 on Steam, so after reading your reply I'm thinking it might be an issue for me, too. I'm not sure what you mean by Origin/Steam owned account, or how to switch. Could you explain a little more if at all possible? Thanks a lot.

@Reinwalz  Are you getting exactly this error, or something different?  Have you confirmed that your EA and Steam accounts are (still) linked correctly to each other?  The fastest way is to try to sign into an EA site, for example ea.com, with your Steam credentials.  If you land in the wrong EA account, or you get an error, that points to a problem with your EA account or the link between the two.

The other player's approach was to add Sims 4 to their EA account and play only using EA rather than Steam.  This is fine if you only own the base game, but any DLC you've bought in Steam won't be available when you install through the EA App.

@puzzlezaddict Thanks so much for your reply. Yes, I was getting the exact same error as in the original post. I ended up doing what reifan did and it worked! It was, in fact, an issue with the link between Steam and my EA account. Thankfully, I only own base game, so there isn't anything I'm missing. My game works again now! Thanks a lot.

Hi there! I've been trying to fix my sims 4 for weeks, (it has the, "There is a problem with your game set up.. etc.) and to no avail. I just did the administrator scan thing that you said to do in your answer, and to post the message we get after the scan. I'm not tech savvy at all, but if there is something I should do according to the message I got, could you please let me know? Thanks!

Here is the message: Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.

@minee_rivas  AMD offers a newer Windows 7 driver for your graphics card, so please install it:

    https://www.amd.com/en/support/downloads/drivers.html/graphics/radeon-rx/radeon-rx-5000-series/amd-radeon-rx-5500-xt.html

Run the installer as an admin: right-click the download and select "Run as administrator."  Restart the computer after installing and before trying to play.

However, this may not help, as in, you might not be able to run Sims 4 in DirectX 11 mode in Windows 7.  Your computer does support Windows 10 (but not 11) if you're willing to upgrade.  Otherwise, you'll need to force the game to use DirectX 9 mode instead.  Open your EA App game library, click Sims 4 > Manage > View properties, and add -dx9 in the command line box.

If I want to force the game to use DirectX 9 mode on Steam, how can I do it?

  • Solved!

I did everything from the beginning, but this last part about the DiretcX9 was the last thing needed, i guess, for it to work... i knew i was missing something!

By the way, thank you very much, you deserve a prize from EA, caused you saved a lot of people's game here!!

    Amazing!

    Cheers! o/

Hello. I have tried every method here several times and can't seem to get it. Reinstalling obviously did nothing, in fact i tried reinstalling windows itself several times. I've been sick for a few days and all i wanted to do is enjoy some videogames but this problem bothers me so much i can't even enjoy other games. Here's a DxDiag, hopefully you can help.
