Re: Sims 4 out of Memory Error - Game Crashes on Startup

@Swifty49  Your dxdiag lists a few Windows system errors, so it's a good idea to run a couple of basic checks on your Windows system files:

  • Hit Windows key-X
  • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
  • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes, and enter
  • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here
  • After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key-X again
  • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator)”
  • Inside the window, copy and paste “sfc /scannow” without quotes, and enter
  • Post the message you receive here

Restart your computer, hit Windows key-i, select Update & Security, and click the box to check for updates.  If any install, restart again afterwards.

When you try to play, force the game to open in windowed mode, which you can do by editing options.ini, in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4.  Ctrl-F to find fullscreen and set it to 0 (zero).  Before launching Sims 4, open the Task Manager, and keep it where you can see it.  Please let me know whether your computer actually gets anywhere near 16 GB memory use, and if so, how much RAM Sims 4 is using and whether there are any other processes using significant memory.  You can click on the Memory header to list the processes in order of RAM used.

    Appreciate the help!

    Reached 100% first try.

    SFC Scan 100% complete.

Result: Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.

    Restarted, Installed updates, Restarted again.

I cannot find the "EA" folder in my documents folder where the ini would be... so unable to change the resolution to Windowed.

I've checked RAM before when launching the game using the monitor and did not see spikes.

I've uninstalled Origin and installed EA Play and now I'm getting a different error when trying to launch the game( I don't even reach the splash screens anymore).

  • Was able to look up the new error and fix it by adding TS4 to Windows Defender ransomware allowed apps.

    Thanks for the help!

@Swifty49  Are you still having issues playing?  The options.ini file will absolutely be somewhere on your system if you've launched the game at all, but you might be looking in the wrong version of Documents, as in, not the one the game is reading.  If you can get far enough to load to the Main Menu, you can find the full file path within the settings:

    https://sims4.crinrict.com/eng/2018/07/how-to-find-your-user-folder/

Otherwise, check both OneDrive's version of Documents and the one that doesn't have OneDrive in its name.  You can access both by opening This PC > C > Users > your username.

But if your game isn't crashing anymore, there's nothing you need to do here.
