Re: Unrecognized Video Card

@denwong47  Thanks for the info.  Do you want help adding the card?  If so, you can add this line to the top of graphicscards.sgr, right under the first line where it says "ATI":

    card 0x66af "AMD Radeon VII" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh

Let me know if you need more specific instructions.  Otherwise, thanks for reporting your device ID.

@snotbubble25  Please provide a bit more information about your card.  Go into Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4, open the file labeled config.log, find the line that says "Graphics device info" (about 30 lines down), copy the next five lines below it, and paste them here.  The last line I need to see starts with "Chipset vendor."

    Here's that information:

    === Graphics device info ===
    Number: 0
Name (driver): NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti
Name (database): [Found: 0, Supported: 1]
    Vendor: NVIDIA
    Chipset: Vendor: 10de, Device: 1f95, Board: 87b2103c, Chipset: 00a1
    Driver: nvldumdx.dll, Version: 26.21.14.4276, GUID: D7B71E3E-5CD5-11CF-3863-BCA71BC2D735
    Driver version: 4276
    Monitor: \\.\DISPLAY1
    Texture memory: 3962MB
    Vertex program: 3.0
    Pixel program: 3.0
    Hardware TnL: 1

I've noticed that when I restart the game, sometimes it doesn't say it's unrecognised and sometimes it does. But I've also noticed that the game has already started lagging after a few hours of playing, which is crazy considering that I'm using a brand new £800 laptop with a dedicated graphics card. Maybe it's something to do with the unrecognised issue?

@snotbubble25  The lagging probably doesn't have anything to do with your card being unrecognized.  Still, you can get it recognized and see how the game runs going forward.  If you still see lag though, it would be best to start your own thread describing the issue.  (And please post a dxdiag.)  This thread is really just for unrecognized cards.

To get your card recognized, you'll need to edit a file called graphicscards.sgr, which is in the game's program files.  Unless you changed the default install location in Origin, the full file path will be:

    Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\The Sims 4\Game\Bin

(You want the file in the Bin folder, not Bin_LE, which is for the Legacy Edition.)  Open graphicscards.sgr (Notepad works fine), and crtl-F to search for 2184.  This will take you to these lines:

    card 0x2184 "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 (Turing)" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh
    card 0x1F82 "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 (Turing)" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh
    card 0x1F91 "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 (Turing)" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh

Create a new line underneath the one with 2184, and paste this:

card 0x1f95 "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 ti (Turing)" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh

Save, quit, launch the game to the Main Menu, quit, and then see whether your card is now recognized.  If it is, you should see a [Found: 1, Supported: 1] value in the config.log.  If it doesn't work, let me know.

@WTDylio  It's easy enough to get your card recognized.  You'll need to edit a file called graphicscards.sgr, which is in the game's program files.  Unless you changed the default install location in Origin, the full file path will be:

    Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\The Sims 4\Game\Bin

(You want the file in the Bin folder, not Bin_LE, which is for the Legacy Edition.)  Open graphicscards.sgr (Notepad works fine), and crtl-F to search for 1f02.  This will take you to these lines:

     card 0x1e87 "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 (Turing)" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh
    card 0x1f02 "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 (Turing)" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh
    card 0x1f07 "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 (Turing)" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh

Change the bolded 1f02 to 1f14 (the device ID of your card), save, quit, launch the game once, quit, and see whether the card is now recognized.  You should see a [Found: 1] value next to its name in the same section of the config file you posted here.  Let me know if it doesn't work.

    @puzzlezaddict Hi,
thanks for the advice; however, I've done what you said, and it's still coming up with
Name (database): [Found: 0, Supported: 1]

    Do you think it's because I'm using a 2070 Max-Q?

@puzzlezaddict Oh wait, I've just double-checked, and I was still in the Bin_LE folder
I've just updated the bin folder and now the config log has changed

Name (driver): NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 with Max-Q Design
Name (database): NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 (Turing) [Found: 1, Supported: 1]

Thanks so much for the help!
  • Uh, actually i'm not sure of it has worked. My game freezes up then white screens, and I have to forcefully end the task.

When I attempt to restart the game, I get this error (see attached)

The only way to restart is to repair on origin, then restart my laptop. This happened before I added my card to the database, and I was hoping that doing so would fix this issue, but unfortunately not.

    Any advice?

    Thanks

@WTDylio  When you edit graphicscards.sgr, does it save as and .sgr file, or a .txt file?  You can set File Explorer to display file extensions if you haven't already.  If the file is saved as a .txt, the game won't read it.

@puzzlezaddict Yeah, It has saved as a .sgr file, though I just went to look at it again, and noticed that where I had previously edited in 1f14, seemed to have changed back to 1f02, which was...odd, does it change back when you repair the game in origin?

@WTDylio  Yes, it does change when you repair, which is probably why you can play again after the repair.  Try the same edit again, and make sure the file is still an .sgr file and not a .txt after you save.
