I have had this problem as well after the last update.
Red crosses over thumbnails, profile pictures, in CAS, everywhere.
What helped me was:
CLEARING THE SIMS 4 CACHE
"The Sims 4's game cache is located at Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/ on both PC and Mac.
1. Delete the localthumbscache.package file in this directory. This helps to "fix" some gameplay bugs."

- @HoneysSims4 It worked! I've been trying to fix it for two days. Repairing the game fixed some of it, but not all. THANKS!
Im also having the problem only for me, its showing up in a pic of a sim who has passed away in a family tree. Im trying to keep track of my family tree but i can't see past the one with the red x. I tried clearing cache and that didnt work and I also repaired the game and restarted my computer. Is there anything else that could work? I dont have mods either

I use a surface pro ( I think thats a mac). Currently yes its just that one sim
