repeated crashing

definitely not just you. my game has been crashing for bizarre random reasons since the updates a few days ago now. last night trying to enter lots in sulani crashed it. then trying to load a household crashed it. today, CAS crashed repeatedly, and then i settled for just staying in live mode but i went to have my sim build a sandcastle and it crashed. in total, i've lost track of how many crashes i've gone thru. i already cleaned out all my mods, factory reset the game files, and everything else that's advised. i'm so upset at this point. i give up on playing again until there's a solution. it's so discouraging, but it's def not just one or two players it seems. i was worried it was my mods too at first.

  • @puzzlezaddict hi there, returning with an unexpected follow up. i carefully followed all your previous instructions, step by step, and just now got to the point of trying to launch the game and now it's even worse. and to be clear im completely confused by this error because the mods and stuff haven't changed i still had stuff set aside to troubleshoot.
i have no idea what i did wrong but is there anything i can do to save my game? :'((

here is the error message i recieved:

    Unable to start:

Cannot start because game data is missing or damaged. If you have
Mods installed please remove them and try again. If not, please repair
or reinstall the game via Origin.

@polarbearlove4 oh wow that is very interesting. i wonder what it is about that model that's bugging the game out. make sure you're subscribed to get notifications from this thread. fingers crossed there is some answer out there or at least a patch update for some of these issues and we can both have our games back soon.

@friedn00dles666  It's odd that you'd get that error now.  It's usually a permissions issue, despite the text of the error message, although it can be caused by mods or a corrupt install.  It's just more common that something is blocking Sims 4's access to the user folder.  What antivirus do you use, and does it help to (temporarily) disable the antivirus?

Please also try playing in a new admin Windows account.  Make it local, as in, don't link it to your Microsoft account; this prevents OneDrive from interfering with the account's data.  You'll be able to launch Sims 4 without reinstalling anything, but your user data won't be available, of course.  You can try it both normally and in a clean boot, in whatever order you want.

  • @puzzlezaddicti completely agree. i was pretty surprised when i got the error. im going to double check again on everything that i'd put back in my mods folder for if i end up moving those over to a new save. but i couldn't find any culprits in there so far.
i believe i just use the default antivirus for my device, i bought it last month so i still have a deal automatically that assigned me one. so just Windows Security. i regularly keep a check/run scans on my device, and so i'll make sure i try that step as well with the game perhaps interfering.

thank you for the idea about the new admin. i can definitely do that, i can see why that could actually be a solution. I will work on that later today and report back with any changes. thank you 🙂

edit: I also want to note that recently i had been trying out CurseForge to manage a portion of the modding process for my game. is there any chance that negatively impacted my game? i plan to just go back to my old school mod organizing methods because over a decade's force of habit lol but i just wanted to note this as well just in case there's something that could have been impacted.

@friedn00dles666  The main problem with CurseForge, as far as I can tell, is that it offers mods that haven't been updated yet (or CurseForge hasn't received and approved the updates) as if they're fully compatible with the current patch.  So someone can download the newest available versions of their mods and still be installing content that will make Sims 4 stop working.

I wasn't aware that you'd added back your mods already.  In that case, the error may well be mod-related, and I would suggest you not use any mods until the game is stable again.  Definitely avoid CurseForge or any other mod manager that would add to or change the contents of your Mods folder automatically, at least for now.  While troubleshooting, you need to know exactly what's in that folder and why so you can keep track of everything yourself.  There is no mod manager out there that will tell you when you have an outdated or otherwise nonworking mod.

  • @puzzlezaddict makes sense about curseforge. i already went back to my old organizing plan to add back whenever things work again.
to be very clear that was what was odd about the error. i had emptied the mods folder back out and then the error came up when i was relaunching my game after trying another repair. after that post i've not touched the game at all. so not mods with that error. so sorry i was unclear.
i'm pretty seasoned at mod management so i'm not worried about having anything broken. everything is fresh from the updates after the patch, i dont add anything back til it's cleared.
so i reckon whatever the bug is, it's a game instability i can't understand on my end. for now, i plan to create a different admin user profile and start a different save. too burnt out to play again anytime soon tho i get very attached to my saves and go grieve lol.
i will still report any changes tho. thank you so much for all the effort to help 🙂
